Jesus: The Way, The Truth, and The Life

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me.’”
John 14:6 LSB

"The Blind Men and the Elephant" is a story found in eastern religions about six blind men who never encountered an elephant before and try to understand what it is based on what they could touch. The first blind man touched the side of the elephant and thought that it was like a wall. The second touched the trunk and thought that it was like a thick snake. The third touched the tusk and thought that it was like a spear. The fourth touched the leg and thought that it was like a tree. The fifth touched the ear and thought that it was like a fan. The sixth touched the tail and thought that it was like a rope. Then they argued with each other about what the elephant was like. The commotion caused the king to come out and declare that the elephant was a big animal, that each man touched only one part, and that they must put all the parts together to find out what an elephant is like. This story is often used to assert the same thing about God and different religions. Maybe you think this way as well. Perhaps you look at all the different religions out there and wonder if they somehow point to the same thing – the same God. You might think that anyone claiming to know the truth (with a capital “T”) about God is ignorant or arrogant. It’s likely that you have all kinds of friends who believe all kinds of things about God and wonder: “Who’s to say who’s right and who’s wrong?”

Fortunately, God does not leave us to grope around in the dark, trying to figure out who He is – nor is He passive or silent. God has spoken and revealed to us who He is; through creation, through His word (the Bible), and through His son, Jesus. Other religions teach a way to God, a way to heaven (or desired end), and a way to achieve “the good life.” But Jesus is the only way to God, the only way to heaven, and the only way to live eternally in the richness and blessing of God. Apart from Him, we would remain on the path that leads to destruction and spend eternity in hell for our sin against a holy, just, and righteous God.
