Embracing the Challenge of Growth
By Danielle Avery
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
- Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)
Life presents us with comforts and challenges, often leading us into complacency. I recall a time, not long ago, when I eagerly embraced new challenges and stepped out in faith. Now, I find myself tethered to my comfort zone, cocooned in familiar routines. It’s in these moments of stagnation that we must evaluate our growth trajectory.
Imagine waking up, nestled under a warm blanket, while the cold air seeps into the room. The idea of facing a chilly morning can be daunting. Initially, the day seems promising—coffee brewing, tasks awaiting, and a world ready to explore. But as time passes, the warmth feels too good to leave. You ponder the comfort of staying in, hesitating to step into the unknown.
However, if we remain in bed, we miss the joys of the day—the invigorating shower, the delightful aroma of breakfast, and new experiences and people that await us. It takes courage to push the blankets aside and embrace the brisk morning air, marking a vital step toward engaging with the day.
As I wrestle with my own hesitations—especially regarding a difficult conversation—I remember that God often calls us into uncomfortable spaces for a purpose. While it might feel overwhelming, moving forward is crucial to fulfill His plans for us.
Ask yourself: What comforts are holding you back from pursuing God’s calling? Whether it’s fear of failure or uncertainty, commit to taking one brave step forward today, no matter how small—writing your feelings down, praying for courage, or setting a time to talk. Growth happens outside our comfort zone. As you step into the unknown, remember Philippians 3:13-14, pressing onward toward the greater prize God has in store. May we embrace the challenge and watch God transform our fears into faith.
