His Way is Through the Sea

"Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen" Psalm 77:19 ESV

The sea can be a dangerous place. Powerful and seemingly boundless, it's a place where one can easily be lost. In Scripture, it often represents a place of affliction and chaos. However, God is always portrayed as sovereign over it. When trials come in our lives, they often come in waves and seem intense and unyielding. We forget God's power and authority and begin to be filled with all kinds of doubt.

Lord, are you still with me?

Like footprints in the sand, we often look for evidence of God walking with us amidst our trials. When we don't see His footprints, we grow weary and restless because we feel like He has abandoned us. But His way is often through the sea, His path through the great waters. If we were to take these paths on our own, we would sink and drown. The apostle James wrote: "Count it all joy, my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing" (James 1:2-4 ESV).

Through footprints unseen, we have confidence that God causes "all things to work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). With each passing wave, let these trials have their full effect: producing an enduring faith that makes us perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
